Pope to meet with the President of the Country

which allows gay couples to wed as of August

3rd, and the law that legalized abortion which

will decide if it is subject to a referendum on

 June 23rd .

On Saturday June 1st the President of Uruguay, José Mujica, will meet Pope Francis. Mujica has been quoted as saying he does not believe in the Catholic Church but he “admires” it and that he hopes to open avenues of cooperation to advance on social issues in his country.
Two men who live what they preachTwo men who live what they preach
Mujica did not attend the Inaugural Mass of the Pope’s reign, stating that he comes from a secular country and does not believe in God. “Although I am approaching death I still cannot believe in God,” said the 78 year-old president to Radio Cero before embarking on a two-week international tour that will take him to China, Spain and Italy.
He shall visit the Argentine Pope with whom he has been compared due to the austerity and simplicity evinced by both. Mujica said that, initially, they only shared a common passion for tango and mate. Known as the world's poorest president, he leads a modest life as he continues to live on the same farm located in a poor area in the outskirts of Montevideo.
Mujica has said he respects believers and the Catholic Church “because it is one of the two axes of Latin America” and considers it is important to have an open dialogue with the Vatican as having “a Latin American Pope, a man that could be your next door neighbour is pretty rare.”
Political scientist Ignacio Zuasnabar considered that the distance Mujica initially wanted to set up could have been due to “the kind of information that initially came to Uruguay” which said that Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio had coalesced with Argentina's military dictatorship, information which turned out to be malicious slander. Zuasnabar also stressed that Uruguay is a “very secular” country when compared to the rest of Latin America.

Mujica’s international tour has a strong economic ring to it but the visit to the Vatican “has a different dimension,” explained Foreign Minister Luis Almagro. “The Pope is a man of the River Plate and has a social vision similar to that of the President. This can open up many possibilities for joint work between the national government and the Church.”
Mujica’s visit to the Holy See comes at a time when Uruguay has passed two controversial laws that had strong opposition from the Church: Equalitarian Marriage, which will allow gay couples to wed as of August 3rd, and the law that legalized abortion, which Uruguayans will decide if it is subject to a referendum on June 23rd .

Pope Francis Shunned Official Papal apartments to live 'normal life'

Pope Francis has revealed for the first time the reasons for his decision to shun the official papal apartments and instead live in a much more modest Vatican 'hotel'.

CHURCHES IN AFRICA HOPE FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE AND STABLE DEMOCRACY

With Zimbabwe and other African Nations heading for elections in the coming months, churches in the region recently reflected on their role in strengthening democratic governance and electoral process. From 15-17 May some 50 representatives of the African churches, ecumenical organizations and civil society gathered at a consultation in Harare, Zimbabwe to address the theme “Democratic governance and electoral reforms in Africa”. The consultation was organized by the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA) of the World Council of Churches (WCC).As Zimbabwe recently adopted its new constitution, church leaders stressed the need for a stable government that can focus on development and economic recovery. In his opening address, Bishop Ishmael Mukuwanda, president of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches, explored how churches can ensure an environment suitable for free, fair and credible elections. This is possible, he said, “given that Christians account for some 80% of the population in the country.”“The process which led to the new constitution has been long and painful. The draft constitution has been fairly well received, but uncertainty still exists,” said Mukuwanda. He continued to say that due to these challenges “we seek to counsel our brothers and sisters in Africa and walk through this journey together with them.”Dr Nigussu Legesse, the WCC programme executive for advocacy on African issues, described the purpose of the conference as assessing experiences from previous elections in various African countries. On the basis of this assessment, he said the consultation sought ways of working towards stronger democracy and governance.“Elections are one of the core pillars for democratic governance and rule. This is achieved through an electoral system that determines impact on the governance,” he said. “This is why it is important for churches to work together.”Legesse explained that the WCC’s involvement in democratic governance is through its peace building initiatives coordinated by its international affairs programme and the CCIA.“The church must therefore call attention to the abuse of power and electoral malpractice. Attention must be paid to the electoral process throughout the transition of power,” he said.“Therefore, it is necessary to set up strategies at all levels of church structures; hence the interest of the WCC in elections and democracy in Africa,” added Legesse.Dewa Mavhinga, senior researcher for Zimbabwe and staff at the Human Rights Watch, spoke on both strengths and limitations of churches in enhancing democracy and good governance. He recalled the leading role played by the churches in the 1880s at the onset of the colonial era, when churches were parties to the signing of key treaties such as the Moffat charter.“In Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, the church played a significant role supporting those involved in the struggles, who received spiritual guidance and stewarding from the church.”“The church as part of the society has a central role to ensure that Zimbabweans are not just subjects but citizens with rights. Therefore the church has a role in answering the questions such as, do people have a clear right to participate in democratic processes; are they able to freely choose who should govern them?” added Mavhinga.“The church must be the unifier not divider, to shepherd the flock despite different political orientations, speak the truth about power using its moral grounding. With extreme polarization, the challenge will be whether the church is prepared to take this role,” he observed.Among other main speakers who made presentations at the consultation were Terence Chimhavi from the Youth Empowerment and Transformation Trust in Zimbabwe and Tsungai Kokerai from the Zimbabwe Election Support Network.

Pope Francis: Following Jesus Is Not a Caree.

Newly elected Pope Francis I, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, leads a mass with cardinals at the Sistine Chapel, in a picture released by Osservatore Romano at the Vatican March 14, 2013. In his first public Mass, Pope Francis urged the Catholic Church on Thursday to stick to its Gospel roots and shun modern temptations, warning that it would become just another charitable group if it forgot its true mission.

Pope Francis said during his homily at the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta on Tuesday that Christians should follow Christ from the heart, and not as if it's a career.

"If you follow Jesus as a cultural proposal, then you are using this road to get higher up, to have more power. And the history of the Church is full of this, starting with some emperors and then many rulers and many people, no? And even some – I will not say a lot, but some – priests, bishops, no? Some say that there are many ... but they are those who think that following Jesus is a career"
The pontiff stressed that Jesus is the way of the cross and that proclaiming his name should go "straight to the heart."
Pope Francis reminded the congregation, which included a group of priests from the Council and staff from the Vatican Power Station and Technical Laboratory, that Peter once asked Jesus, "What is our reward in following you?" – a question that concerns all Christians everywhere. Jesus replied that those who follow him will have "many good things" but "with persecution," the Vatican leader said, adding that the path of the Lord "is a road of humility, a road that ends in the cross."
Just as Christ traveled the road to the cross, Christians should also be ready for difficulties and persecution, he noted. Simply believing in Jesus will be a cause for such persecution, he said, adding that "the spirit of the world" does not tolerate such faith.
"When a Christian has no difficulties in life, when everything is fine, everything is beautiful, something is wrong," the pope warned.
The pontiff continued: "Following Jesus is just that: going with him out of love, behind him, on the same journey, the same path. And the spirit of the world will not tolerate this and what will make us suffer, but suffering as Jesus did. Let us ask for this grace – to follow Jesus in the way that he has revealed to us and that he has taught us. This is beautiful because he never leaves us alone."

ALLIANCES WITH CHURCHES STRATEGICALLY IMPORTANT TO THE UN

“Sustainable development rests in people, with women empowered, with young people engaged, with people of all traditions, faiths and cultures living in dignity and rights,” said Dr Kate Gilmore, director of the United Nations Fund for Population (UNFPA) for Latin America, during a presentation at a consultation in Havana, Cuba, on 21 May.The consultation was part of the programme of the 6th Assembly of the Latin American Council of Churches (CLAI), taking place in the Cuban capital between 21 and 25 May, under the theme “Affirming ecumenism of concrete gestures.” Gilmore’s presentation was part of an event within the assembly on “Churches and Sexual and Reproductive Rights.”In her presentation, Gilmore shared figures about the situation of young pregnant women around the world and pointed to the urgent need to continue the process inaugurated by the Cairo Plan of Action, which is the outcome of the 1994’s UN Conference on Population and Development. At the 1994 UN Conference on Population, in Cairo, the WCC urged “open, constructive dialogue” among the churches on issues of reproductive health, particularly within the larger contexts of poverty, inequality, and women’s rights.“As the [Millenium Development Goals] draw to a close, 222 million women still lack access to family planning,” Gilmore said. “Of the 210 million pregnancies each year, nearly 33 million are unattended, leading to 21.6 million abortions and causing 27,000 deaths each year. If we had family planning, we’d have 26 million fewer abortions and 1.1 million infant deaths avoided.”At the Cairo conference the WCC said, “We would contend that it is better to place the issues of population in the context of improving the quality of life.  Quality of life is enhanced when people can attain their full potential, when the full spectrum of human rights is respected, when people are subjects rather than objects of policies, when they make choices in life and most all, when basic and spiritual needs are fulfilled.”Gilmore affirmed that “the discussion of issues like reproductive rights and family planning with churches is urgent, essential, and compassionate.” The UNFPA co-sponsored the consultation in Cuba and considers the alliance with churches “strategically crucial.”Addressing 350 participants, Gilmore stated that in most cases the arena in which human dignity and empowerment are most important is also the most intimate: sexual and reproductive rights.“We must work in alliance,” she said.  “This is neither a UN agency agenda nor a particular government’s policy. It is not the product one single faith or individual, but a work of the human community.”As an example of cooperation between the church and UN, the Latin America Council of Churches and UNFPA developed and published a study guide on sexual and reproductive rights, created for churches and ecumenical organizations. Its main goal is as a pastoral tool and for theological reflection, discussion, empowerment and organization around the theme of reproductive and sexual rights in churches. The handbook was presented and shared during the consultation, and member churches were asked to express their commitment to use it partially and/or integrally in their pastoral work.Eduardo Campaña, one of the editors of the handbook, said that the material comes in response to “a need felt in the churches and ecumenical organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean to include a real and concrete answer to the problems and consequences of an issue that is part of the daily life of our communities and people, especially women.”Gilmore, whose father served previously as a WCC president and member of the WCC Executive Committee, put the collaboration into larger perspective.“Our partnership with CLAI is about improving the fundamental dignity of people,” she said. “You are agents of change and you are promoting efforts to reduce poverty, strengthening women, youth and indigenous people, and you are raising your voice for comprehensive sexuality education, reproductive rights, family planning, the prevention of HIV and the fight against sexual violence.”The Latin America Council of Churches was founded in 1982 and has its headquarters in Quito, Ecuador. It currently brings together 188 Protestant churches and denominations from 20 countries and has as its main function consultation and coordination of pastoral work.
