A
group of participants from a conference in Kenya celebrating more than
30 years of women's ministry in African churches were welcomed in
worship on Sunday 22 June by the African Israel Nineveh Church (AINC), a
member church of the World Council of Churches (WCC). The service was
held in Ruiru.Jane Akoth, moderator bishop of the AINC's Ruiru congregation, led the Sunday worship service, while Rev. Mabel Morny of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana preached. Archbishop John Mweresa Kivuli II of the AINC chaired the service and expressed appreciation for the strong role of women leaders in the Kenyan churches.
The AINC prides itself over the prominent number of women leaders in its congregations, ordained both as pastors and bishops. The church also has a programme dealing with HIV and AIDS, working to support community members affected and infected by the pandemic. Women's leadership in African churches and in addressing HIV and AIDS were major themes in focus at the conference in Kenya hosted by the St. Paul’s University chapter of the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians in Limuru. The sponsors of the conference included the Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiative in Africa (EHAIA) of the WCC.
Some sixty women church leaders from Zambia, Malawi, Swaziland, Ghana, Uganda, Eritrea, Rwanda, Tanzania, Cameroon, Kenya and the Netherlands participated in the Kenya conference.
