CONDOLENCES OVER THE DEATH OF PRAKAI NONTAWASEE

10 July 2013

The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit has expressed “great sadness” over the death of Rev. Dr Prakai Nontawasee, former member of the WCC Central Committee and Faith and Order plenary commission in the 1970s and 1980s.

A theologian from Thailand known for addressing women’s concerns, and an active initiator of Christian-Buddhist dialogue in Asia, Nontawasee passed away on 4 July in Chiang Mai.

In his letter to the Church of Christ in Thailand, of which Nontawasee was an ordained minister and vice moderator, Tveit acknowledged Nontawasee’s work for the Asian ecumenical movement spanning more than four decades. “As we mourn her passing away, the WCC recognizes and remembers her invaluable contributions to the ecumenical movement. She will be remembered as one of the great ecumenical women leaders from Asia,” said Tveit.

“We thank God for Rev. Dr Prakai Nontawasee’s life and witness,” he added.

Nontawasee served as president of the Christian Conference of Asia in the 1990s. Among her many capacities in serving Christian institutions, she was a professor at the McGilvary Faculty of Theology at the Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Among her many published works is her article for the International Review of Mission titled Confrontation of Phii-ka and Christianity: A Case Study, which appeared in 1987.
